UBC’s Faculty of Medicine, in collaboration with the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC), the University of Victoria (UVic) and the provincial government, launched its innovative, distributed medical education program in September 2004. Medical training in BC is now distributed across three sites: the Island Medical Program (IMP) at UVic, the Northern Medical Program (NMP) at UNBC, and the Vancouver-Fraser Medical Program (VFMP) at UBC. UBC Faculty of MedicineUBC Faculty of Medicine is one of the largest schools in North America. They accept 256 students into the first year. “The admissions selection process is rigorous, but fair. The goal is to recruit intelligent, dedicated and well rounded students, so equal weighting is given to academic and non-academic achievements. About one third of all applicants are invited for an interview, the format of which is documented elsewhere on the website. A composite value derived from university course grades, non-academic activities and the interview scores is used to rank candidates. Final selection of the top ranking candidates is made by committees.” |
UNBC - Northern Medical Program“The Faculty of Medicine encourages applicants who come from or are interested in learning and practicing medicine in rural, remote, or northern communities. Students at every site will undergo some rural practice training, but the Northern Medical Program provides an opportunity to complete undergraduate medical training in a northern regional centre that serves rural, remote, and northern communities. A significant goal of the Northern Medical Program is to increase the number of graduates who plan to practice in these communities. The admissions application is designed to assess each applicant's suitability for rural training. The BC government offers a number of financial incentives for the recruitment and retention of physicians in rural BC communities, including the student loan forgiveness program, designed to mitigate the costs of a medical education for those students willing to locate in rural, remote, or northern communities after the completion of their training.” Click here for more information on UNBC - Northern Medical Program. |

UVic - Island Medical Program“UBC Faculty of Medicine is seeking well rounded students from a variety of backgrounds who are interested in a career in medicine. There are 256 spaces available for first year students. After spending their first semester at UBC, 32 of these students will complete their four year course at the Island Medical Program, benefiting from the University of Victoria’s expertise in health-related research and its spectacular setting on Vancouver Island. Students will also experience the health-related challenges of working in the Island’s mid-sized, rural and coastal communities. The study of medicine is not just about having top marks. As well as their academic achievements, applicants are evaluated on their interpersonal qualities such as integrity, motivation, social responsibility, leadership potential and diversity of experience.” Click here for more information on UVic - Island Medical Program. |
