The UBC R3 Enhanced Skills Program began in 1995 as an effort to meet the medical skill needs of underserviced communities of British Columbia. Many physicians, after several years of practice, have identified needs in their communities that would be well met by family physicians with appropriate focused training. This program has been established to try to address that need and to provide physicians and communities with the skills they require to manage their health care programs. The Department of Family Practice at the University of British Columbia is pleased to make available a number of residency positions for this however these positions are not a back door to a Royal College Residency.
This flexible program, with a minimum training time of 2 months to a maximum of 12 months, requires physicians to develop specific learning objectives between their preceptor(s) and the Department of Family Practice. Certain areas of training such as CCFP(EM), FP Anaesthesia, Oncology and Health Care of the Elderly, have set curriculums. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis except for those programs mentioned above with a set curriculum. Please see our website for more details.
Applications will be considered and approved in the following priority order according to training time and training spots available:
At the end of the training period, a UBC Certificate of Completion will be presented to a resident completing 6 month to one year residencies. A Letter of Completion outlining the training taken will be presented to residents completing a shorter residency. No certification will follow the completion of the Enhanced Skills Program, with the possible exception of Emergency Medicine, which may lead to the CCFP (EM) examination.
Successful candidates will be paid at an R3 resident level plus benefits. If training for less than one year, this amount will be pro-rated accordingly.
