Created by the General Practice Services Committee (GPSC) in 2007, the Family Physicians for BC Program (FPs4BC) is a $10 million program which provides funding to attract newly qualified family physicians to establish their practice in one of BC’s rural communities of identified need.

Together the programs offer family physicians (FPs) incentives to stay in family practice and to live and work in some of the more remote areas of British Columbia.

Eligibility:

A physician will be eligible for the FPs4BC program if they meet the following criteria:

  • Can be licensed to practice in British Columbia.
  • Has completed family practice residency training within ten years prior to the date of application (if applying in 2007, to be retroactive to 1996), and has set up or joined a practice after April 1, 2006.
  • Is willing to commit, for a three year return-of-service period, to provide full service family practice in a designated community.
  • Will participate in the Chronic Disease Management program and accept orphan patients where feasible.

Benefits:

Each qualifying physician is eligible for a maximum of $100,000.

Within the maximum allowance physicians can include any of the following options in any mix that meets their needs:

  • Student Debt repayment – up to $40,000.
  • Funding to set up or join a group practice (e.g., leasehold improvements, capital costs, costs for a practice mentor or moving costs, and with consideration for solo for remote or rural areas) – up to $40,000 per physician.
  • A New Practice Supplement for the first 26 weeks of practice of $2,000/week (total $52,000).
  • Please visit FPs4BC for additional information and the Application Form.
