Vanderhoof is a service centre for the surrounding area. Shopping here is concentrated in a main street area and includes an indoor shopping mall, 4 grocery stores, several department stores, a variety of clothing stores, banks and a credit union, restaurants, hardware stores, a library, a movie theatre and postal service.

Places of worship in Vanderhoof serve the Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, United, Glad Tidings Tabernacle, Gospel, Anglican, Jehovah's Witness, Baptist, Lutheran, Seven Day Adventist, Mennonite, Catholic and other faiths.

There are 5 elementary (Kindergarten to grade 7) and 2 secondary (grades 8-12) schools in Vanderhoof area as well as 5 private, 3 Christian, 1 Catholic and 1 Mennonite school. French immersion programming is available as are some daycare services for small children. The local campus of the  College of New Caledonia offers adult education programs from basic literacy to university transfer, including vocational and professional development.

Community events/entertainment: 

The annual Nechako Valley Exhibition is a must for horse lovers and farming enthusiasts. On the first Friday in December, the Annual Parade of Lights in Vanderhoof and the Legacy of Lights at Saik'uz Park offer up a dramatic parade and good shopping after wards during Midnight Madness.
