Prince Rupert is the largest city in northwestern British Columbia and a gateway to the Queen Charlotte Islands, the famed "Inside Passage" and smaller towns in the area. Amidst fjords, rain forests, lagoons and sandy beaches. Prince Rupert is surprisingly cosmopolitan with all the modern conveniences of a larger city, including a performing arts centre, restaurants and a lively nightlife. Prince Rupert is recognized as one of the world's leading ports, exporting billions of dollars in coal, grain, lumber and potash every year. Fishing, forestry and tourism are also mainstays of the economy. Recreation activities around the protected waterways of the island-studded northwest coast include boating, wildlife viewing, ocean sport fishing, kayaking and whale watching.
