Powell River's modern history is largely based on the forest industry and abundant natural resources in the area. The town was named in 1881, after the BC Minister of Indian Affairs at the time.

The Community of Powell River is located on the Sunshine Coast of BC, 141 km northwest of Vancouver. It boasts an 18-hole championship golf course, an all-weather track, ball fields and a large recreation complex. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy the numerous parks, beaches and hiking trails in the area. Powell River is known as one of the prime destinations for winter diving in North America.

The area experiences a moderate coastal climate with sunny, mainly dry summers and almost snow-free winters. The average temperatures in July is 22.7 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperatures in January is 1.7 degrees.
