Inuvik is located in the Northwest Territories on the Mackenzie Delta close to the Arctic Ocean. It is the third largest community in the Northwest Territories and the region's major commercial and administrative centre. Inuvik means "Place of People", has a population of 3484 (2006), and is home of a large variety of Aboriginal people such as the Inuvialuit and Gwich'in. Inuvik was settled around 1953 and was a replacement administrative centre for Aklavik on the west of the Delta. In the 1970s and 80s, the economy was supported by the Canadian Forces station as well as petrochemical companies exploring the Mackenzie Valley and Beaufort Sea. Currently, the main industries of the region are public administration, transportation and furs.

Due to its northern location, Inuvik receives an average of 56 days of continuous sunlight in the summer and 30 days of polar night in the winter. Inuvik experiences a Continental Arctic climate characterized by cool temperatures in the summer and extremely cold winters.
